Harvest Science: Cannabinoids
What are cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids (e.g., THC and CBD) are the chemical compounds secreted by cannabis flowers. They provide relief for a variety of physical symptoms including pain, nausea, anxiety, and inflammation.
How do cannabinoids work?
Cannabinoids imitate naturally produced compounds in our bodies called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids are central to maintaining internal stability and overall health. So when there is an imbalance, cannabinoids bind to receptors to assist with homeostasis or balancing the internal functions of the body.
How are cannabinoids different?
Cannabis flowers contain more than 85 different cannabinoids, but the most commonly discussed elements are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is known for its psychoactive properties, while (CBDs) are “non-psychoactive.” So, THC produces a “high” or “stoned” feeling and CBDs are linked to reducing anxiety, inflammation, and pain without creating an altered mental state. When you see product descriptions:
This is providing you with the ratio of CBD to THC. The first number reflects the amount of CBDs in the formula, when compared to the amount THC. So when you see 13:1, for every 13 parts CBD, there is one part THC. When a tincture or foodicinal is high in CBDs, you will see the first number is much higher than the second.
This means the CBD content is strong and the product offers a more medicinal treatment than one which is high in THC, but low in CBD.
